Like a broken record, I’m attempting to once again revive my blog. Some updates…
- I’ve upgraded to K2, and modified my header image to fit. I had to drop the green-ish background for the sidebar. It just didn’t work right with the new layout.
- As a result of the above, I’ve got a lot of nice new features and icons to play with, asides being one that I’m very excited about.
- I’ve upgraded to Gallery 2 (finally), integrated it with Wordpress, and themed (1, 2) it to fit in nicely with K2.
- As a result of the above, I decided to start fresh with my pictures, thus I’ve only gotten pictures of interest to family up. More to come, though.
- I’ve upgraded to a Macbook Pro 2GHz. Wow. More on that later.
Enjoy.
Seeing as how I’ve taken a renewed interest in my blog, I figured it was probably a good idea to start paying attention to my comment spam filter, Spam Karma. It’s been working well, deleting at least 20 spams a day, but I’m worried it might start eating legitimate posts. Unfortunately, seeing as how I’m the only one that reads this blog, I have no way of testing that just yet.
However, Michael Heilemann over at Binary Bonsai seems to spit on Spam Karma (and many other comment spam plugins), claiming they’re too aggressive. I respect what Michael has to say, and I too am worried, but I’m not yet ready to pull the plug. Instead, I decided to read everything I could find regarding Spam Karma, and tweak it to find that sweet spot of spam-eating goodness and comment-friendly environment. Here’s what I’ve found so far…

So, its been almost 6 months since I last updated this blog. Pathetic.
Well, at least I’m returning with style. I’ve completely changed the site. I’ve switched from Movable Type to WordPress, which is all good. I’m using the wonderful Kubrick template, with my own modifications. Hey, I’m even sporting a cool picture of myself on the site. Yeah, I know, no one cares.
I’m still working out some of the small details, but for the most part the site should work just fine. I swear I’ll be updating it regularly now. No, I mean it this time. It’ll mostly be geek stuff, because that’s pretty much all I do and think anyway, but at least it’s progress.
I’ve finally finished the major work with my site overhaul. I’m now running everything on MovableType, and I love it. I also took the opportunity to completely redesign the site with XHTML and CSS, and I think it looks quite nice. I’ve also created a second blog for family stuff, so my family members don’t have to wade through the drivel I post to the main blog every day. With Lily on the way, I’m sure that blog will be well visited.
I still have some cleanup work to do with the comments, and I need to fill it out with content I’ve been meaning to write for some time. I’m going to start churning stuff out this weekend.
I’m seriously considering moving the site over to Movable Type. A lot of it has to do with the fact that my current weblog, b2, seems to have been abandoned by the author. I’ve always felt it was hacked together anyway. The code’s a mess, features are incomplete, and that drives me nuts. I don’t have the time to clean it up, as I’m working on my inventory application right now. However, moving to Movable Type would most likely entail a redesign, which I’m of two minds about. I’ve been looking to move to a cleaner site design for a while, but at the same time I’ve always thought my site was rather personal looking.
Anyone care to comment. Anyone reading this besides me? … I didn’t think so.
I’ve done some major updates to the internal workings of the site. I’ve moved my blog from
Personal Weblog to
B2, primarily because of it’s support for the
Bloggar API though
XML-RPC. In the end, this will allow me to update my blog using
software on my PC, instead of having to log into the site to make changes. It’s a nice feature that I hope will spur me on to update the site more.
I have also added a section to the site called the BOFH log. It’s essentially a running log of my day at work. It’s a way for me to purge my frustrations, as well as work out ideas that I have to better run my network. In the end, I hope somebody will get something useful out of it. I plan to update the BOFH log several times a day.
I’m also considering move my photo album to something easier to manage from my PC. I’m not sure what, but I want to be able to take photos from my new digital camera, and put them right onto the site after some editing. We’ll see what I find.
I’ve been tweaking up the code a bit for the site. Things are starting to look a little more polished. I really like the catagory icons, however MS Internet Explorer users may notice they don’t look quite right. It would seem MSIE can’t handle PNG transparancy very well, so some of the icons look like they have a white background, instead of blending into the page like they’re supposed to. Hopefully MS will fix this in IE6 SP1, but don’t count on it. In the meantime, may I recommend IE users switch to a real browser?
