- No third-party apps: Guess I won’t be running SSH on this baby.
- Non-removable battery: Yeah, because that worked so well with the iPod.
- Pure touch screen: Sorry, a touch-screen dial pad is bad enough. I touch screen keyboard should lead to some interesting emails.
- No 3G: HSPDA is the future of GSM data, and for $600 my phone better have it.
- 5-hour talk time: “Hi Mom, how are you. I just got my new iPh… <NO CARRIER>”.
- No over-the-air sync: No Blackberry connect, no Exchange ActiveSync, hell not even .Mac.
Basically, it’s like this. The iPhone is a consumer-oriented convergence device. It’s not designed for people who actually use their smart phone for productivity. It’s designed for the collage kids on HowardForums who think a 2-megapixel camera is a must have feature in a phone. I’ll stick with my Q, thanks.
Long time no blog…
I’ve noticed over the last week that every Apple-related news website in my RSS reader has made mention of an Apple Store in Rome slated for 2006. I don’t understand why this is such a big deal. I don’t see postings on CNet every time CompUSA or Fry’s opens a new store. Then I realized it’s just Apple’s groupie phenom.
Apple has a following like none other in the computer sector. If you think Linux had fanboys, you haven’t seen anything until you’ve seen Mac-addicts gush about Apple. I haven’t really pruned out any of the pre-loaded Apple news feeds that come with NetNewsWire, but now I’m thinking it’s time. Every time Apple makes even a hint at a move, the RSS feeds lite up with the same thing. Hell, even iPod accessories from third-party manufacturers rate a story among even the larger Apple news sites. The Rome Apple Store (no, not a store for Rome apples) has finally done me in. I can’t take it anymore. Please, for the love of God, stop covering every time Steve Jobs sneezes.

No Hassle my ass. I’ve been trying to close a credit card with Capital One for about 3 months now, and I think I’ve just now gotten it sorted out. I’d bet money that these companies intentionally ignore your first account closure request just to keep you as a customer. The second time I called, complaining that I was still receiving statements and accumulating monthly charges, they said there was no record of my first call. Uh huh. It took four calls and a few demanding statements to finally get them to credit my account to a zero balance and mark it for closure at the end of the month. Now I just have to wait and see if it actually worked this time. I hate credit card companies.

I was really, really hoping the headline to this article ended after three words…

This article really, really, pissed me off. I fumed, I cursed, I stamped my feet (okay, not really), but I couldn’t come up with the words to voice my distaste. So, I e-mailed it to Brad, who is much better at expressing his opinion on this kind of thing than I am. Therefore, I provide you with his (R-rated) response.
“Wow, Scarborough (or whatever the fuck his name is) closes his rant with the very reason why Glover could and should say whatever the fuck he wants. And wow, he convinced a corporation to change their ad campaign–what a fucking hero! On a side note, not only is Danny Glover outspoken about these issues (which as you know are not really very controversial if your head lives outside of your ass), but I’m pretty sure he stars in a lot of independent films that deal with the ideas that he’s outspoken about, like the films of Charles Burnett. I can’t figure out these conservative, middle American fuckwads. There’s so much hate, so much stop-the-evil-liberal bullshit. Shouldn’t their energy go elsewhere? I guess conservatives feel that the establishment is correct, and so these cats are defending their interests and beliefs, and that’s where their energy is directed. I just want to smack him upside the head with a phat history lesson.”

Oregon Law Would Jail War Protesters as Terrorists.
This is a terrifying possibility.
Right now the U.S. government is working to topple a regime that does just this sort of thing, all under the guise of “freedom for the people”. And here we are, trying to take away that very freedom.
I think I’m about to be sick…

I’m beginning to become very frightened of our government, and very angry at the same time. Reports abound of people being held by our government without trial, without legal representation, without even being charged. They’re just being “detained”. All in the name of “national security”.
Typically, these people are not American citizens. Sometimes they’re in this country illegally, although not all of the time. Sometimes, they’re caught abroad. Regardless, these people have essentially no criminal rights. None. Of course, they’re not American citizens, right? So they’re not entitled to the rights guaranteed by the 5th, 6th, or 8th amendments? True, they’re not. However, hasn’t it always been America’s intention to spread democratic rule to the rest of the world, to promote the same freedoms and values given to us by the constitution? So why, then, would we not offer these same basic rights to foreign citizens? I just don’t understand it.
If you think I’m just being paranoid, if you think these non-American citizens don’t deserve our rights, then that’s your choice. However, how do you feel about the two (and maybe more) American citizens being held without these rights?
