This article on Slashdot has spurred my interest in building my own PVR (personal video recorder, a.k.a. TiVo) for my house. While the “geek” in this article choose to use Windows, I’ve decided to go the Linux route. He may have had problems, but clearly he was a Linux neophyte. I have a large amount of experience with Linux, so the OS and its installation won’t be my obstacle. In the long run, I may find that the PVR software for Linux just isn’t up to snuff, but it will take some time to come to that decision. Also, unlike this guy, if things don’t go well I’ll probably just break down a buy a TiVo. I’m in the process of installing Gentoo on a spare machine, and will do some testing and evaluation with that before I commit to a full blown digital media network. Hopefully, I’ll like what I see, because I’m already psyched about MythTV and all its add-ons. I’ve decided to setup a section of the site devoted to this little experiment. You can see what I’m doing and track my progress over there.
