I recently did a blind-buy of an album. I normally don’t do this sort of thing, since I was burned a few years ago when I bought something because I liked the band’s name. It turned out to be crap, and a waste of about $16. So ever since, I’ve been careful with my CD purchases. I listen to sound samples, I read reviews, and I see how it fits into my other music tastes. As you can tell, it’s a rather huge process akin to buying a car. If only I was this considerate with every purchase, I wouldn’t have so many books I never read.
Anyway, to rein in the narrative that I’m trying to get across here, I recently picked up a Stereolab album entitled Sound-Dust. I’m pleased to report I did not waste my $15. I’d never heard a Stereolab song before, much less an entire album, but I was thoroughly impressed. I’ve read that this album is one of their more tame ones, so I’m apt to experiment with some of their other discs. And just to keep the excitement going, I think I’ll blind-buy those, also.
