I recently did a blind-buy of an album. I normally don’t do this sort of thing, since I was burned a few years ago when I bought something because I liked the band’s name. It turned out to be crap, and a waste of about $16. So ever since, I’ve been careful with my CD purchases. I listen to sound samples, I read reviews, and I see how it fits into my other music tastes. As you can tell, it’s a rather huge process akin to buying a car. If only I was this considerate with every purchase, I wouldn’t have so many books I never read.
Anyway, to rein in the narrative that I’m trying to get across here, I recently picked up a Stereolab album entitled Sound-Dust. I’m pleased to report I did not waste my $15. I’d never heard a Stereolab song before, much less an entire album, but I was thoroughly impressed. I’ve read that this album is one of their more tame ones, so I’m apt to experiment with some of their other discs. And just to keep the excitement going, I think I’ll blind-buy those, also.
Well, I saw it, and I liked it. I liked it a lot. I’ve been over it several times in my head. The love story is a bit of a strech, but the action, and over-all scheme of what Palpatine is planning, is really what makes the movie. And Yoda is just amazing in everything he does.
The event itself was fun. It was a freakshow, as I feared, but it was still fun. A few people in costume, but mostly just a bunch of sci-fi nerds out to see their type of flick. It was interesting being in an audience like that, because there was a lot of natural energy. People clapping, cheering, laughing, during the movie; but everyone knew just when to shut-up. It was a unique experience.
As promised, I got a few pictures. I’ll post them as soon as I finish of the roll in my point-and-shoot, which I don’t use that often, so it may be a week or so. They’re mostly of some kids in jedi costumes having a “light-saber battle” down in the front of the theatre.
Well, I’m off to wait in line to see Episode II. I’m sure it’s going to be… interesting. However, no matter how annoying (or just plain bizare) the line wait will be, the movie will more than make up for it (at least, it better). I’m taking my point-and-shoot, so I’ll post any good pictures I get in a few days.

This little XMMS visualization plugin is one of the coolest and funniest things I’ve ever seen. Load up some hip-hop and watch him shake his little penguin self.

I spent the evening messing with my computer again. I ended up installing SuSe Linux v8. All I can say is, “Wow, what a nice distribution”. I had to fight with it a bit to get it installed, as is typical of most Linux distro’s on my machine because of my wireless stuff. However, once I had that whipped, the rest of the setup was a breeze. KDE 3 is fantastic. Fast, stable, functional, pretty, the whole nine. I think I’ve found a new favorite distribution. I’ve always been a huge Debian fan, but lately they’ve fallen behind the curve in new software, and it’s always a major pain to get everything setup just right (ALSA anyone?). Don’t get me wrong, the DEB packaging format and APT-GET still kick ass, but SuSe just works, and it works good. I’ll post a little page later this week detailing my install and thoughts for those interested…
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones reviews are hitting the ‘net, since the press screenings have been going on for the past week or so. Everywhere there is news, postings, tidbits. It’s driving me nuts, because I can’t wait to see this film. I know, I’ve read some of the bad reviews too, but it’s the fan reviews that I care about. And they’re all positive, even from the Comic Book Guy types. I have no doubts that this will be a fantastic Star Wars movie.

Notice the "Star Wars movie" bit, not "fantastic character study", or "insightful social piece". Good movie reviewers know how to recognize a target audience, and how to appreciate something for what it is.

Anyway, I’ve got my 12:15am tickets, and I’m counting the days. I just hope the midnite showing isn’t too much of a freakshow. I don’t really want to be sitting next to "Chewbacca" and "Princess Leia"…

It appears that Segfault is finally coming back after a lengthy absense. No real front page or anything yet, however, a number of older stories are available for viewing, including my favorite Segfault story of all time. Check it out, you’ll laugh (provided you’re a geek).
And just for the record, VIM is my editor of choice, and is also what I use to design and maintain this site. Let the flames begin!
Well, I spent my entire weekend doing yard work. We were over at my mother-in-law’s house opening the pool, and we decided to borrow my parent’s power washer to clean the backside of the house. Well, I got a little carried away, and power washed the big wooden retaining wall and steps down to the pool, every stone walker in the garden, and the concrete pool decking. I was thoroughly waterlogged afterwards, but oh what fun it was. To quote myself from Sunday, "It’s amazing how much more enjoyable yard work is when power tools are involved."
I’m finally selling my old Nikon 5005 and Quantaray lenses on Ebay. If anyone is interested in purchasing a decent, and inexpensive, auto-focus Nikon camera, this isn’t a bad choice. Check it out.
I just saw Spider-Man, and wow, it’s really good. It’s definitely a comic book movie, but it has great mass appeal. It takes a while to tell it’s story, but it kept me entertained the whole time, and the ending was terrific. See it, you’ll like it. Up next, Send in, err, Attack of the Clones. I haven’t been this hyped to see a movie since, well, since Episode I, which sucked. So this better rock the house.
I know it’s been a while since I updated the page, but I’ve been really busy learning about Windows 2000 Server. Besides, it’s not like anyone reads this.
